The ABCs of EK
Important information for 2021-22 School Year
“A”
Art is every Monday from 12:25-1:06 with Mrs. Bray.
If your child is absent, please call the office (906-779-2626) by 9:00 am, or send a note to school ahead of time to excuse him/her. Any/all materials and/or work your child misses will be sent home when he/she returns.
Allergies can affect our children in many ways, and some can be dangerous. Please inform me if your child has any food allergies or other significant allergies.
“B”
School bell rings at 8:05 am, but students may be dropped off on the playground as early as 7:30 am.
School begins at 8:10 am and ends at 3:15 pm.
If you would like to send a birthday treat with your child on or near his/her birthday, please feel free to do so. These treats will be eaten during our snack time. Birthdays are recognized in class as well. We can recognize summer birthdays at the end of the school year if you wish. Please do not send birthday invitations for your child to distribute at school unless all children receive one. Otherwise, you can give the invitations to me to place in student backpacks when they are out of class. This is done to spare any hurt feelings.
Breakfast is served daily and is available in the cafeteria before school for students, starting at 7:30 am. Breakfast prices will be sent home as soon as we are notified of what they are for this school year.
Book orders will be sent home throughout the year for you and your child to look over. Book clubs offer quality children’s literature at reduced prices. It’s a great way to build your child’s home library. Do not feel obligated to order.
“C”
We have a brand new Language Arts and Math curriculum this year!!
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on November 10th from 12:00-3:00 pm and 4:00-6:00 pm. Information regarding conferences will be sent home when this date is closer. If you feel a conference is necessary at any other time, please feel free to contact me.
Childcare is available before and after school from 6:30-8:00 am and 3:05-5:30 pm with the exception of national holidays. For more information, contact Community Schools at 906-779-2675.
“D”
Discipline is simple. We try our best to focus on positive reinforcement centered on our classroom rules. If the behavior is of a violent nature, a parent/guardian will be notified. We will use the stoplight method. Green means awesome behavior; Yellow means a warning was given for making a poor choice; Orange means that a student continued to make poor choices after a warning was given resulting in a consequence (time out from play time or recess); and Red means your child has continued to make poor choices after a consequence and teacher/student discussion was held. Parents will be notified if their child is on “red”. Weekly behavior reports will be sent home on Fridays in your child’s folder.
Dance/Movement will be with Mr. Williams on Thursdays from 10:05-10:40 am.
Drama will be with Mrs. Basanese-Hill on Wednesdays from 1:55-2:40 pm.
“E”
My school email address is [email protected]. I will check it daily. If you have an email address that you would like me to use as a form of communication, please let me know.
Current phone numbers are important in case of an emergency. If your home or work phone numbers change, please inform the office and/or me.
“F”
Free Centers is a time for your child to experience opportunities for “free play”. Students will self-select an area in which to work (play). Children learn through play and this is an important time, integral to the growth and development of your child. Free Choice Centers will be held every day.
Friends are an important part of our children’s lives. I will do my best to ensure that everyone is included. Good manners are practiced and acceptance of everyone is modeled regularly.
“G”
Gym will take place with Ms. Ducat every Tuesday from 12:20-12:50 pm and Thursday from 12;20-12:50 pm. Children are required to wear tennis shoes on gym days. They may keep their tennis shoes in their cubbies.
“H”
Students will not have homework in Early Kindergarten. They have a long day at school and home is a place to unwind and prepare for the next school day.
“I”
Independence is a goal for students because it builds self-confidence. Students are very capable of doing many things on their own, and I encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves in the classroom. Please help your child with the following self-help skills at home: zipping, tying, buttoning, dressing (especially during the winter), etc..
“J”
Juice or water may be sent in for snack time. If you send juice, it should be kept in their backpack until snack time to prevent spills.
“K”
Kindness is practiced every day all day in our classroom.
“L”
Our class will visit the library every Wednesday at 10:00-10:30 am. They must return checked out books a by Tuesday or Wednesday the following week. If the book is not returned, a new book cannot be checked out until it is returned. If you have an email address to share with the school, our library system will automatically send you an email when your child is missing a book. Just fill out an email address on your emergency card.
Lunch/Recess will be everyday from 11:20-12:00. Students may bring a cold lunch from home or they may get hot lunch at school. Lunch prices will be sent home as soon as they are determined. Milk will be available for your child to have every day at lunch. They will have a choice of chocolate or white milk. This is included in the hot lunch price.
When money is sent to school for lunch, book orders, or special events, please put the money in an envelope and label it. It is important for me to be able to keep accurate records and labeling things will help me with that.

“P”
Parties will be celebrated in class for the following special days: Halloween (carnival at the middle school), Thanksgiving (feast), Christmas (visit to the movie theater), and Valentine’s Day. **These events depend on the Covid status at that time.
Our principal is Mr. Donny Bianco. His email address is [email protected]. He can also be reached by contacting the school office.
“Q”
Quiet time will take place each afternoon for approximately 20-30 minutes. During this time, the lights will be off so students can “take a break”. Recess will be after lunch and in the afternoon (1:32-1:45).
Remind 101 notices will be sent out via text messages to help remind you of upcoming and important events in our classroom and at school. Instructions to join Remind 101 will be sent home in your child’s folder. This is a great way to communicate with each other.
“S”
We will have Snack Time every morning. We will have community snack. Students are asked to send in a healthy snack to share with the class once a month. Please send in a non-perishable snack like crackers, granola bars, goldfish, graham crackers, fruit, gogurt (can be put in our fridge), etc…. I will send a reminder home when our classroom snacks are running low. If your child would like to bring their own daily individual (healthy) snack that is fine too.
